| Principal Tunnel Design Engineer - Greater London
My client is an international multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy and due to increased workload a fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Principal Tunnel Design Engineer.
As a Principal Tunnel Design Engineer in this company your responsibility will include feasibility, design, analysis, and the overall management of multidisciplinary teams and projects. This is a long-term career appointment with the opportunity to work on the most challenging and exciting projects and advance to more senior management positions within the company.
Job Description Day-to-day responsibilities for tunnel engineer include :
- Project Management and leadership with other engineering disciplines including, structural, environmental, mechanical and electrical engineers covering a range of project requirements from new build to modification, maintenance or refurbishment.
- Lead responsible for management of preliminary property protection (settlement) studies, Tunnelling Methodology Report, cost estimates, feasibility studies, construction methods and coordination with systems and station consultants
- Detailed design calculations and drawings for tunnel main bore, design feasibilities and interfaces between tunnels, shafts and ticket halls
- Manage numerical modelling analysis on the tunnel or underground works structure and related engineering
- Support and potentially lead on Bid management, assisting in tenders for a variety of tunnel and underground work projects.
- Potential involvement in designing sprayed concrete lining, canopy tubes / spile canopy support, face support measures, cross passage and niche junctions.
- Responsible for timely production of reliable design solutions, reports, specifications or drawings,
- Becoming integral to the divisions operations and contribute to the business and the teams technical development. Assisting in the mentoring and management of new graduate engineers
- Responsible for helping to organise, plan and execute many aspects of the assessment program including site testing and inspection, analysis, classification and reporting.
Candidate Specification:Essential criteria include for tunnelling engineer include:
- Strong academic qualifications, ideally in civil engineering, preferably with MEng or MA qualifications although
- Chartered engineer status, MICE status preferable
- Experience of working within a design consultancy on multiple concurrent commissions, and representing the company to clients
- Extensive experience of design risk management, tendering process and quality assurance management
- Extensive experience of PM processes, from feasibility and design through to construction and close-out
- Extensive experience of methods, tools and techniques for the design and assessment of tunnel designs supporting assessment to a range of project demands
- Extensive experience and knowledge of differing underground construction techniques including TBM bored tunnels, hand excavated tunnels, NATM and cut-and-cover works
- Extensive experience of selection and design of tunnel linings in the construction of shafts and sprayed concrete lined tunnels preferably with UK design codes
- Experience in structural design and understanding of basic soil or rock mechanics
